Single Voice
Single Voice
Words and Music by Christine Lavin
Recorded live at the Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs NY
on August 20 1999 by Bob Noble of Hill & Valley Studio
I am a Single Voice
In a big crowd
My voice is not very strong and not that loud
I try to tell it to you true
I don't want to compromise
But if I'm weak
If I am petty
I apologize
And the world spins 'round
No matter what I say
And the sun comes up and the sun goes down
Every day
And the old man dies
And the baby is born
I can rejoice with my voice
And I can mourn
So I move ahead
While I glance behind
And every once in a while
I compose a line
That I will toss out
To the one below
I raise him up beside me
Steady as he goes
And as I travel through time
Zoom through space
All I am asking of this world is to find a place
Where I can feel safe
And I can be strong
I've been on this journey for so long
I've been on this journey for so long
You are a Single Voice
In a big crowd
I hope your voice is stronger than mine
And just a little bit louder
You make your way through
Every single lie
You lay the truth at our feet
Well at least you try
But the world spin's round
No matter what you say
And the sun comes up and the sun goes down
Every day
And the old man dies
And the baby is born
You can rejoice with your voice
And you can mourn
So you race ahead
While you glance behind
And every once in a while
You compose a line
That you will toss out
To the one below
You raise her up beside you
Steady as she goes
And as we travel through time
Zoom through space
All we are asking of this world is to find a place
Where we can feel safe
And we can be strong
We've been on this journey for so long
Scribbling our simple futile songs
Some of us lean left but some lean right
Traveled through the darkness here tonight
I hope you are in a comfortable chair
I say that so you know I care
You wonder about the music that I do
Well I am just as curious about you
So now lets see what this evening holds
There are many stories to be told
With a Single Voice
