Preface

I've been a touring musician since 1985, though my adventures really started two decades earlier, in 1964, when I first picked up a guitar. That was also the year the Beatles made their American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show—February 9, to be exact. Let's declare February 9 a national holiday! We have enough sad dates emblazoned on our souls—November 22, 1963; September 11, 2001—why not a happy one?
Instead of a business plan, I've followed hunches, my intuition, and my heart and have had the good fortune of meeting astounding people along the way who helped point me in the right direction. Okay, a few pointed me wildly in the wrong direction, but I always managed to recover somehow.

I've changed a few names to spare hurt feelings, but all these stories are true. Hey, I have eight brothers and sisters—you think they'd let me make things up?

I dedicate this book to four people: the late Laura Weber, who started me out on guitar; the late Dave Van Ronk, who taught me how to play it; Barry Humphries, a.k.a. Dame Edna, the most brilliant comedic performer in the English-speaking world; and Ervin Drake, one of the greatest songwriters in the English-speaking world.

There is an index (and song list) at the back of this book, and I encourage you to Google every single name listed there. You might make some life-changing musical discoveries. You know I would never steer you wrong.
